What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

Many people are asking, what is the NDIS? The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way to help Australians under 65 years of age with a permanent and significant disability get the care and supports they need to take part in everyday activities. The NDIS is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

The NDIS is designed to achieve two main goals:

  • Cover the costs of the reasonable and necessary supports that a person with disability needs based on their personal situation, needs and goals.
  • Give people with a disability greater choice and control over the supports they receive: eg. which supports, where when and how.

People who are eligible for the NDIS are referred to as Participants. To access the NDIS, participants go through a planning process where they identify their needs and goals, and develop a plan that specifies the supports they need. The plan must be approved by the NDIA for funding.

Find out more at the national NDIS website. or get in touch with Inspiro here.
