In the Yarra Ranges area we are very lucky to have some amazing farms you can visit.

The school community is getting in touch with food through farm to plate programs like the Jamie Oliver and Stephanie Alexander projects (See our earlier blog post Healthy-eating-project-aims-to-slow-rising-obesity-in-Victorian-primary-schools). Your family can get involved too!

Jay Berries of Wandin East is an amazing farm that grow many different types of crop. They offer pre-picked vegetable packs and fruit products or, for just a few dollars, you can go and pick your own fresh produce!

Jay Berries was founded 20 years ago

Jay Berries was founded 20 years ago at John and Jola’s Wandin East property. Initially a strawberry farm, it now stocks all sorts of berries and vegetables. Jay Berries is a ‘u-pick’ farm that offers a great chance to see how a variety of veggies and berries are grown.

Eating a variety of foods is essential for good health

Is there such a thing as a superfood?

There is no single superfood that can provide all the nutrients in the amounts we need to keep healthy. To maintain good health we need adequate amounts of:

  • vegetables 
  • dairy or alternatives
  • fruit
  • meat or alternatives 
  • grains and cereals

The benefits of eating a variety of these foods include:

  • Increasing the chance of meeting nutrition requirements
  • Promoting good health
  • Protecting against some diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity
  • Reducing the likelihood of nutrient deficiencies

Different brands of multi vitamins have different amounts of nutrients in them. They may not have enough or the right balance of nutrition for your body.

Protect yourself against diseases with whole foods

More importantly, there are parts of whole foods -other than nutrients- that can protect against some diseases. We are finding more evidence about this every year.

Our recommendation is always to have good wholesome food first and then top up with supplements if needed. Be sure to talk to your dietitian, doctor or pharmacist about your vitamin and mineral supplements.
