Anna Bell - Inspiro Family Support Worker
Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies, Child Youth & Family Team

Anna what kind of people do you help?

We help any pregnant women within the shire of Yarra Ranges that feel they need additional support during pregnancy, this may include; Unplanned pregnancy, financial hardship, mental illness (including a history of PND), housing issues, smoker, drug and alcohol use or history of addiction, intellectual and physical disabilities, socially isolated, limited supports, multiple pregnancy, high risk pregnancy, legal issues, domestic violence, sexual assault victims, victims of child abuse, DHS involvement past or present, young mothers, single mothers and transport difficulties.

At what stages of life do you help them?

During pregnancy till 6-8 weeks post natal.

How are you able to help them?

Every case is unique, our support may include; transport to medical appointments, material aid (baby goods, food vouchers, toiletries, maternity clothes), one on one child birth and parenting education, child safety, emotional support, written information (books, pregnancy magazines, brochures) home visits, linkage into long and short term support and medical services  like housing, counselling, family GP, enhanced  and main stream Maternal and Child Health, parenting support services, podiatry, physio, dental, stop smoking clinic, child birth education classes,  young mums groups, playgroups, and women’s health - contraception, continence, pap smears.

What kind of problems can the people you help encounter?

Pregnancy is a challenging time for most expectant mothers, there are a lot of stressful elements like financial difficulties, financing baby goods which may result in getting second hand items that no longer meet Australian Safety standards, being unwell, pre and post natal depression, battling addictions, limited support, history of trauma that can often cause flashbacks during pregnancy, un stable relationships, family dramas, anxiety and fear, change of medications, homelessness, health concerns (high risk pregnancies) and premature births.

Does your personal experience with your own children prepare you better to help others?

Yes I feel it makes me a more empathetic clinician, I have struggled personally with difficult pregnancies, I was a younger mother, suffered PND and breast feeding was a huge challenge so I can relate with my clients and reassure them that they are not alone, everyone has challenges.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I love how every case is unique but often the women have the same goal which is to be a great mum, I loved that my job is to help them reach that goal by providing parenting education, encouragement and linking them into long term services for on going support. I love watching the change in women sometimes they are difficult to engage, huge anxiety and fear especially of childbirth, show little interest about becoming a parent and have a hard time coming to terms with the unplanned pregnancy to visiting in the home shortly after birth to a beaming, proud and happy new mother who will say comments like “I never knew it would be like this, its so hard but so amazing, he/she was worth every worry, this is the best thing I have ever done”.

I’ve heard that Inspiro gives cots to families. Who qualifies for this service?

Anyone that is having difficulties financially or that has an unsafe cot that was given to them due to not being able to financially afford a safe one.

About Anna:

Anna is a mother of three beautiful young daughters.

Vicki Reddick - Inspiro Community Nurse
Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies, Child Youth & Family Team

What kind of people do you help?

I work with the Healthy Mothers Healthy babies program ( HMHB). (with Anna Bell). We assist vulnerable pregnant women who live in the shire of Yarra ranges. These vulnerabilities may vary. Mental health, poverty, homelessness, Drug and alcohol use, social isolation, or a combination of these issues. We work on the principle that is a woman asks for assistance we will help them. I also do women’s health and Stop smoking service. I work 3 day on HMHB and 1 day on the other programs.

How are you able to help them?

For HMHB it may be transport to appointments, linking with other services, referrals, material aid in the form of baby goods or transport, emotional support- home visits, woman’s health advice on menopause, continence and contraception.

We also help with mental health, pap smears and STI information. Our stop smoking plans get help for those who need it with nicotine replacement, assistance with recognising triggers and counselling and support to help them quit.

What kind of problems can your clients encounter?

We have a very broad range of clients, from young single pregnant women to a women having there sixth child!  So as you can imagine the needs of our clients vary greatly. Often we can work with clients who have many services involved or some that are really isolated. Each case is very individual.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I enjoy the variety of experiences and different roles that my job entails - no two days are the same.  I get to meet some really interesting people and have lots of challenges with how to best help them.

Who qualifies for services like free cots?

All of our clients qualify. We attempt to see if they can source equipment themselves and this is a joyous experience for may people but can help out if this is impossible.
