Inspiro has dietitians to help improve your health and eating choices. Our dietitians recommend eating healthy, fresh food., In Australia, the government's dietary guidelines recommend five serves of veggies per day (a serve is defined as approx 75grams) and two serves of fruit per day (a serve is about 150grams). With that in mind our marketing guy Sam visited Kookaberry Farm to taste test its fresh produce.
Today I called Kookaberry Strawberry Farm and spoke to Frances - the owner, along with her husband Tony who was born and raised on the farm. Frances was very patient with my many questions and took the time to tell me all about the farm, its history, what is grown and made there and most importantly, the times of year that the public can get their hands on delicious fresh fruit and berries. I found out later that Frances is the chair of the Yarra Valley Regional Farm Group, Victoria's longest running farmers' market and supporter of many local businesses (click here for more info about Australia's longest running local market).
Frances told me that Kookaberry Strawberry Farm has been growing all kinds of berries for 40 years and is a family run business. Fourteen years ago Frances' husband Tony came up with the idea of using the farm's lesser known berries by producing jams - that are now made by Frances (who is an incredibly hard worker).
Kookaberry Strawberry Farm is situated in Wandin (address at the bottom of the article) and specialises in fresh strawberries, raspberries, figs, blackberries and boysenberries, jams, sauces, syrups, gift packs and balsamic vinegar's . And sometimes, if you know the right time to go, you can get some other special items that are only in season for a few weeks.
When I arrived at the farm...
When I arrived at the farm I was met by a farm worker who tried to direct me. We were both a bit confused. Then Frances came out. She immediately offered me some strawberries (the best I've ever tasted) and showed me the farm fields, the production line and the produce stores.
The taste test!
When I got home my two boys started eating the strawberries and when I looked up they had eaten the entire 500 gram punnet (that's never happened before!. I'm always pleased when the boys eat lots of fruit, it means I know they'll be getting their recommended intake of 2 serves of fruit per day, which includes important vitamins.
