31st August is International Overdose Awareness Day

We use this day to spread the word that drug overdose is preventable. If we end the stigma and shame around overdose, we can save lives.

International Overdose Awareness Day is the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind.

The campaign raises awareness of overdose, which is one of the world’s worst public health crises, and stimulates action and discussion about evidence-based overdose prevention and drug policy.

You’ll see some of the campaign posters when you visit our sites. Check them out:

How Inspiro helps

Here at Inspiro we have AOD (Alcohol and other drugs) counselling services and an NSP (Needle Syringe Program)

Alcohol and Other Drugs

Our AOD services aim to help people who are having problems with substances (including alcohol, other drugs, or prescription/over-the-counter medications). We can do this face to face or through telehealth.

If you want to refer yourself, please contact: SuRE 1300 007 873 to conduct an intake and you can request Inspiro- Lilydale or Belgrave for counselling.

We have an MSRS (Medication Support and Recovery Service) also, which specifically deals with clients who may be having problems with their use of over the counter and/or prescription medications.

To be referred to the Medication Support and Recovery Service at Lilydale or Belgrave contact- 0455 051 374 or 9738 8801 to speak to Megan.

The Needle and Syringe Program (NSP)

The Needle and Syringe program is a confidential and non-judgemental service.

We offer free equipment such as needles, syringes, sterile swabs, and contraception to anyone who needs them. The service aims to reduce drug related harm and reduce spread of infection and blood borne infections

We have two sites at Inspiro offering this service: 17 Clarke St, Lilydale and 1616 - 1624 Burwood Highway, Belgrave. Both sites have a self service set up.

After hours NSP services:

For afterhours services in the Eastern Region, clients can call CHOPER (Community Outreach Program Eastern Region) on 0414 266 203. CHOPER work every night of the year from 7.30pm-11.30pm.

This afterhours service can also provide training for the use of Naloxone and give information of where you can acquire it free of charge. Naloxone is a drug used to temporally reverse an opioid overdose. Naloxone can be issued in two forms: Injectable (Prenoxad) or nasal Spray (Nyxiod)
