How do clients find out about our counselling service? (the one’s that you see)
Through their schools, council groups, website and other services
The Yarra Ranges Council recently spoke with Saba, an Inspiro youth counsellor and asked her some questions about Inspiro’s counselling service.
Saba, how do clients normally access Inspiro's free counselling service?
By calling intake on 97388801. If this is the right service for them they will be given an appointment almost immediately (for the time being as there is no waitlist) or will be followed up by a counsellor directly.
How do you help them?
By providing the young person with a safe space where they can share whatever is on their mind. We can help in exploring options, and developing strategies to help them manage in everyday life. We can also help with linking them to other services as needed.
What are some of the challenges they face?
A lot of the young people that come to us often struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, family issues, school etc. Young people face many challenges these days, sometimes people can appear on the outside to be coping but secretly inside they are not.
What are your appointment times/hours; can people come in after school or at night?
Appointment times range between 9am to 5pm Mon-Fri, with 4pm being the last session. Some afterhours appointments can be made on a Tuesday evening depending on the availability of a clinician.
Inspiro’s youth counselling is available at Healesville on Monday and in Tecoma on Thursday between 9am to 5pm (again, 4pm being the last session). Sessions are available in Yarra Junction on an appointment basis between 9-5pm (last appointment at 4pm).
How many counsellors work in youth and family counselling at Inspiro?
We have two youth and family counsellors. We also have psychologists, drug and alcohol counsellors and general counsellors.
What is the average number of times you would see someone for counselling?
That all depends on the client and whether they feel that they have met their goals or have seen an improvement in how they are managing. We initially offer up to 6 sessions, however that can be extended to 12 sessions. The average is between 5-7 times.
Are parents and families welcome to attend too?
Parents are welcome to attend sessions given that the young person consents for this to happen. We do not offer family therapy but can work with the young person in the family context. On some occasions, we can offer some parent support.
Saba, thanks for your time and for helping to provide a great service to the local community.
